Alumni Spotlight: Chancellor Mirco Haag

Chancellor Mirco Haag (SFS’09) 2007 Philodemic President Treasurer for 1.5 years

What are you up to now?

I am a Deputy District Attorney in Monterey County, where I work on environmental and consumer cases. Monterey is one of the most beautiful places in the world and I’m proud to help keep it that way.

I am also CFO of a FinTech startup founded by another great Philodemician, Farooq Tirmizi.

How has your time in Philodemic influenced your career path?

The least helpful and most obvious answer is that I’m a litigation attorney – one of the stereotypes of the post-graduate Philodemician. But Philodemic didn’t push me into any one path. Rather, the same things that attracted me to Philodemic also attracted me to the career paths I’m now walking.

Philodemic’s influence has been the many amazing people I’ve been lucky enough to meet and call friends, including amazing mentors such as Alex Henlin who had visited the society as an alumnus when I was a student and with whom I kept in touch as I went to law school. And Philodemic is also how I got to know Farooq, which is how I ended up where I am today.

What was your favorite debate or memory from your time in the Philodemic Society?

My favorite debate was the Merrick debate of “Ancients vs. Moderns,” but all of my favorite memories were from the after-debate discussions at Martin’s.

What does Philodemic mean to you?

Philodemic has always meant a lifelong community of friends who like to argue and love tradition. I’m lucky to count many of my friends today from my Philodemic days, and, to no one’s surprise, we still debate just about everything.
