Philodemic Endowment FAQs

What exactly is the "Philodemic Endowment"?

  • The Philodemic Society Endowed Fund will be a permanent part of Georgetown University's overall endowment that is solely for the benefit of the Philodemic Society—meaning it will contribute to the Society's overall annual budget.

Is my donation tax exempt?

  • Yes! The university will even send you regular updates with the total amount you've donated for tax filing purposes if you set up recurring donations.

How will the Philodemic Society get the money?

  • Once we reach our pledged goal of $100,000, the Society will begin to receive monthly installments of an annual sum of roughly 5% of the overall endowment—this amount allows the endowment to grow over time with interest (and any future donations)!

What happens if we don't hit our goal by 2030?

  • Georgetown University gets to keep the money we raised and reallocate it as they see fit. Once we reach our goal, the money is secured for the Philodemic Society.

Can my donations to the Endowed Fund made during fundraising competitions (e.g. class year donation competitions for Homecoming) count towards those competitions?

  • Yes! Even the donations by graduating seniors for the 1634 Society competitions can be made to the endowment and count toward the competition goal.

What will the endowment be used for?

  • Principally, the endowment will guarantee the Society's longterm financial stability. Whether it is the cost of renting chairs for guests at debates or putting on the Merrick Dinner, or unexpected costs that arise year to year, regular and ad hoc funding requirements that keep the Society thriving will be supported by the endowment.
